NLS Salon Special: The Norwich Blood Libel, Circumcision, and Ritual Murder, with Professor Paola Tartakoff
14th July 2021 @ 7:00 pm
In 1230, Jews in the English city of Norwich were accused of having seized and circumcised a five-year-old Christian boy named Edward because they “wanted to make him a Jew.” Contemporaneous accounts of the “Norwich circumcision case,” as it came to be called, recast this episode as an attempted ritual murder.
As we continue our preparation for Tisha B’Av, we will explore antisemitism in Medieval England – and how mounting tensions over conversion and circumcision played a role…
Rabbi Natasha will be in conversation with Professor Paola Tartakoff, Chair and Professor of History and Jewish Studies at Rutgers University, New Jersey. She is the author of groundbreaking works Conversion, Circumcision, and Ritual Murder in Medieval Europe and Between Christian and Jew: Conversion and Inquisition in the Crown of Aragon.
