Artemesia Gentileschi – Renaissance Artist for Our Time
25th November 2020 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Join Rabbi Jeremy and National Gallery curator, Lucy Chiswell in our zoom room here for a conversation about one of the leading painters of her, and frankly any, time.
Gentileschi, subject of a sensational exhibition at the National Gallery, frequently turned to the Hebrew Bible for subjects. Her most famous paintings (four of them) feature the apocryphal beheading of the Assyrian General Holofernes. They are an astounding triumph of revenge over the rapist of her youth. In the words of one critic, the, currently shuttered exhibition of her work is, ‘a thrill ride from beginning to end, a Scorsese film shot in 17th-century Italy’s meanest streets, and it starts with a blow right to the heart.’
